1962 Daily Jobs (and Ping Pong?)

The workdays article reminded me of our special assignments. I worked in the sacristy. I also worked the Fill-Inn, and made sure all spent their 40 cents wisely. I remember we had trouble with the ice cream one time, it had melted and was refrozen and not fit to eat. Fr. Warren worked hard to replace it with fresh ice cream.

My favorite job was on the athletic crew. It seems I was in my element digging holes for the new basketball standards, painting the backstop for the handball courts, or dragging the infield after a baseball game. I still love digging in the dirt. (Both sides of my ancestors: Spanish and Irish were farmers.) I think I competed with Tom G. for Fr. Severin's time. I so wanted to be head of the crew as a senior. Tom G. and I ended up sharing the honors.

At the seminary I also learned to love the game of ping pong. I would literaly spend hours at this game and get a work out. I played until Ray Halverson would enter and unzip his foam paddle from its case and proceed to whip my tail. I still love the game; tried to pick it up when I retired, but was no match for the entusiasts at the rec centers in San Jose.

Some good memories. Tom '62
