1960 Music Memories

My name is Jack Williams and I attended St. Anthony's from 1958 through 1960.I hope I can give you a few of my memories of those years and describe what an influence Fr. Warren, had on my life. While Fr. Peter (Latin), Fr.Martin (English?)Fr. Severin (Biology,Geometry) Fr. Nevin (art) all had an influence, nothing came close to what I learned from Fr. Warren with music. There were two areas that were important to me: the choir and the class Music Appreciation. First the choir. Fr. Warren gave me the opportunity to join the choir in my sophmore year. Certainly not a great voice but I always felt I could contribute as long as I was surrounded by other 1st bass singers. Learning and singing Gregorian Chant was wonderful. Learning all the Masses was wonderful. I remember something about Misa Luba(??) an African Mass that we bought on records. We recorded a Mass with the Friars from next door at the Mission. Was that with Columbia records? But what I loved the best is when we traveled to La Purisima Mission on Pentecost Sunday to sing that Mass for the parish. Then we sang at the Fiesta after Mass and ended with "Adios, adios amigos, adiosamigos nuestros...." believe it or not I still remember every word of that little ditty!!! But the best was when Fr. Warren would wheel in the tape recorder on those warm Santa Barbara spring afternoons and teach us about the great materpieces of music. I still play Mikail Ippolitov-Ivanov's Caucasian Sketches. I have quite a collection of classical music which I would never have had an interest in except for those very formative years at SAS. Everyone from Tchaikovsky to Gershwin. Anyway, thanks to Fr. Warren for the great influence he had on me during those years. I often wondered if Acuna went off to be a great organist!!!!  Sorry for the ramblings but it is not often I have the opportunity to recollect on my years at St.Anthony's which were truly wonderful for me.
